White fillings

White fillings, or more accurately tooth coloured fillings, are also known as composite fillings. They are routinely used in front teeth where an amalgam (silver coloured) filling would not be appropriate but they can also be used on posterior teeth. We can also use them to ‘fill in gaps’ in between your front teeth as part of a smile makeover.

Composite is a strong material which chemically bonds to the tooth. From an aesthetic point of view these fillings are great - it may be difficult to spot that the tooth has been restored at all.

Some patients feel they would like to replace their old, existing fillings with white ones for either aesthetic reasons or due to concerns about the mercury in amalgam fillings. Our dentists will be happy to discuss this option with you - presenting you with a realistic view of the facts to enable you to make an informed choice based on a full understanding of the health benefits or risks.
